Columbus, Montana

Columbus is a town located in Stillwater County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,748. It is the county seat of Stillwater County.

Geography

Columbus is located at 45°38'18" North, 109°15'8" West (45.638445, -109.252332). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.20% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,748 people, 709 households, and 455 families residing in the town. The population density is 557.8/km² (1,449.6/mi²). There are 762 housing units at an average density of 243.1/km² (631.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.62% White, 0.23% African American, 1.26% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 1.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 709 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.98. In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $33,750, and the median income for a family is $46,103. Males have a median income of $37,750 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,689. 13.6% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.6% of those under the age of 18 and 15.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
