Columbia Heights, Minnesota

Columbia Heights is a city located in Anoka County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,520. It is home to Columbia Heights High School (Abbreviated as CHHS), the Heights Theater, several auto body shops, three liquor stores, a plethora of fast food eateries, and Twin City Comics. There are also several well-maintained parks within the city limits, notably Huset Park, Kordiak Park, La Belle Park, and McKenna Park.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.2 km² (3.5 mi²). 8.9 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.82% water. The city of Hilltop is entirely enclosed within the city.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,520 people, 8,033 households, and 4,731 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,072.6/km² (5,368.7/mi²). There are 8,151 housing units at an average density of 912.2/km² (2,362.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.39% White, 3.62% African American, 1.64% Native American, 3.46% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 2.59% from two or more races. 3.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,033 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.93. In the city the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,562, and the median income for a family is $50,610. Males have a median income of $35,092 versus $28,993 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,368. 6.4% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line.
