College Republicans

College Republicans
is the section of the
Republican Party
of the
United States
for
college
and
university
students. It is represented nationally by
College Republican National Committee
which organizes and assists chapters nation wide. Notable College Republicans include
Karl Rove
,
Lee Atwater
and
Grover Norquist
. Today there are over 1140 chapters across the United States with over 130,000 students.
Activities
The College Republicans' activities vary from chapter to chapter. Typical activities include inviting guest speakers (often elected officials or party activists), arranging for members of the club to work on campaigns, and organizing students for letter-writing campaigns or
phone banks
. Local clubs also organize
voter registration
drives.
History
The College Republicans were founded on
May 17
,
1892
, at the
University of Michigan
by
James Francis Burke
. The organization was christened by
Ohio
Governor
William McKinley
with students from institutions as far away as
Stanford University
and
Harvard University
present. That same year, Burke was elected the youngest Secretary of the
Republican National Committee
. Past Chairs of the College Republicans include
Bob Dole
