Cold Spring, New York

Cold Spring, or Cold Spring-on-Hudson, is a village located in the Town of Philipstown in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,983. The Village of Cold Spring-on-Hudson was incorporated in 1846. It borders the smaller village of Nelsonville. Commuter service to New York City is available via the Cold Spring train station, served by Metro-North Railroad.

Geography

Cold Spring is located at 41°25'8" North, 73°57'16" West (41.418907, -73.954522). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.64% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,983 people, 910 households, and 528 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,255.1/km² (3,273.9/mi²). There are 953 housing units at an average density of 603.2/km² (1,573.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.57% White, 0.45% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 910 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 35.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.88. In the village the population is spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.4 males. The median income for a household in the village is $53,382, and the median income for a family is $76,403. Males have a median income of $54,643 versus $42,036 for females. The per capita income for the village is $34,560. 5.4% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
