Cleopatra Selene
Cleopatra Selene
(
40 BC
–
AD 6
), sometimes referred to as
Cleopatra VIII
, was the daughter of
Cleopatra VII of Egypt
and
Mark Antony
and the
twin
sister of
Alexander Helios
. In about
26 BC
she married
Juba II of Numidia
, and as a wedding present
Augustus Caesar
made Cleopatra Selene queen of
Mauretania
in her own right. The couple ruled as king and queen of
Numidia
until the political situation grew too uncomfortable for them, and then they moved to Mauretania. They had at least two children:
Ptolemy of Mauretania
(
1 BC
–
40 AD
) and
Drusilla of Mauretania
(b.
5 AD
); there may also have been a daughter named Cleopatra.
Xenobia of Palmyra
traced her descent from them.
