Clarendon, Texas

Clarendon is a city located in Donley County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,974. It is the county seat of Donley County.

Geography

Clarendon is located at 34°56'11" North, 100°53'28" West (34.936415, -100.891182). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,974 people, 768 households, and 489 families residing in the city. The population density is 261.9/km² (679.0/mi²). There are 929 housing units at an average density of 123.3/km² (319.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.49% White, 7.19% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.99% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 6.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 768 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 34.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.97. In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 13.9% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,824, and the median income for a family is $37,083. Males have a median income of $25,486 versus $18,882 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,436. 15.4% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.0% of those under the age of 18 and 19.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
