Ciudad Trujillo

Ciudad Trujillo (Spanish for "Trujillo City") was the name by which Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, was temporarily known between 1936 and 1961. The city was almost entirely demolished by a massive hurricane in 1930. Over the ensuing years, it was rebuilt and, ultimately, re-named in honor of dictator Rafael Lenidas Trujillo, who was serving as president at the time. Trujillo was assassinated in 1961, and the city returned to its original name.
