Cinderford

, with a population of about 7,500 people. The town lies on the eastern fringe of the
Forest of Dean
, and serves as the area's regional centre. It grew in the
nineteenth century
as
coal mines
were opened in the area, but most of these closed in the
1960s
; a few remained in production into the late
1980s
.
