Chūō (中央区; -ku) is a special ward located in Tokyo, Japan. It is historically the main commercial center of Tokyo, although Shinjuku has risen to challenge it since the end of World War II. As of 2003, the ward has an estimated population of 81,996 and a density of 8,078.42 persons per km². The total area is 10.15 km². The major districts of Chuo Ward are Ginza, Hatchobori, Hamacho, Kayabacho, Kyobashi, Nihonbashi, and Yaesu. The ward was founded on March 15, 1947.
