Charmander (Japanese: ヒトカゲ Hitokage) is a fictional character from the Pokmon franchise. Charmander, as well as its evolved forms, has a flame on the tip of its tail; the flame is said to indicate its life-force, burning weaker or stronger depending on the Charmander's condition. Baby Charmander that are not yet familiar with this flame sometimes accidentally burn themselves with it. Charmander generally prefer hot places to live.

Name origin

Charmander is a probably portmanteau of char and salamander. Hitokage was probably formed from 火蜥蜴 (hi tokage, literally fire lizard), but can also be viewed as being a pun on words (人影 - hito kage, means shadowy figure).

Availability

In Pokmon Red and Blue, Charmander is one of the starter Pokmon, along with Bulbasaur and Squirtle. The same is true in their enhanced remakes, Pokmon FireRed and LeafGreen. In Pokmon Yellow, Charmander is not a starter, but one is given to the player as a gift at one point. In Pokmon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Charmander can only be obtained through trading with the original three versions. In Pokmon Ruby and Sapphire Charmander is only obtainable by trading with FireRed and LeafGreen. Charmander also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokmon Snap.

Anime Appearances

In the Pokmon anime, Ash Ketchum and his friends once found a Charmander on a rock, waiting for its owner. Because a Charmander will die if the flame on its tail goes out, they feared for its life during a rainstorm. Ash and his friends rescued it and took it to the local Pokmon Center, but it returned to the very same rock once it had recovered. It turned out that its Trainer had abandoned it and deceived the Charmander by convincing it he would come back for it. After the Charmander discovered this, it rejected its previous Trainer for Ash. Ash's Charmander later evolved into Charmeleon and then into Charizard.
