Charles G. D. Roberts

Sir Charles George Douglas Roberts (January 10, 1860 - November 26, 1943) was a Canadian writer and poet, considered one of the most important figures in the development of a national Canadian literature. Initially he was known for his verse; he wrote also a great deal of fiction, with many short stories, of which those dealing with animals are best known. He has been called the Father of Canadian Poetry. He was born in Douglas, York County in New Brunswick and educated in Fredericton and at the University of New Brunswick. He worked as a journalist and academic until 1898, when he started to write full time. He served with the Canadian Army and then with a commission in the British Army in World War I. He was knighted in 1935.
