Champotn

Champotn is a small city in the state of Campeche, Mexico, located at 19.35N 90.72W, about 60 km south of the city of Campeche where the small Champoton river meets the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. In 2000 it had a population of about 23,500 people. Champotn, historically also called Chakanputun and Chanputun, was a city of the Maya civilization dating back to at least the 10th century before it was conquered by Spain in the 16th century. Champotn is also a municipality within the state of Campeche, including the city of Champoton and the surrounding area. In 1999 the municipalty of Champoton had a population of 80,224 people.
