Cape Girardeau County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 68,693. Its county seat is Jackson6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,518 km² (586 mi²). 1,499 km² (579 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 68,693 people, 26,980 households, and 17,941 families residing in the county. The population density is 46/km² (119/mi²). There are 29,434 housing units at an average density of 20/km² (51/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.13% White, 5.28% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 26,980 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.50% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.96. In the county the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 13.40% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $36,458, and the median income for a family is $45,518. Males have a median income of $32,371 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,593. 11.10% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.40% of those under the age of 18 and 10.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
