Cape Canaveral, Florida

Cape Canaveral is a city located in Brevard County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,829. The city of Cape Canaveral is located at the northern tip of a barrier island on the Atlantic coast of Florida. It is due south of the geographical feature Cape Canaveral (known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973), which is on Merritt Island. It is an important port for cruise liners, which take on passengers here for cruises to the Caribbean.

Geography

Cape Canaveral is located at 28°23'18" North, 80°36'13" West (28.388382, -80.603498). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²). 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,829 people, 5,066 households, and 2,097 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,463.0/km² (3,788.0/mi²). There are 6,641 housing units at an average density of 1,100.5/km² (2,849.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.68% White, 1.43% African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 3.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,066 households out of which 11.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.7% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 58.6% are non-families. 47.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.74 and the average family size is 2.41. In the city the population is spread out with 11.3% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 28.8% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 109.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,858, and the median income for a family is $43,109. Males have a median income of $33,571 versus $22,423 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,537. 11.6% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line.
