Candlemass (Band)

This article is about the band Candlemass, for the Christian feast day, see Candlemas.
Candlemass is a Swedish Doom metal band established in the 1980s by Leif Edling (bass), main leader and songwriter.

Biography

After Leif Edling dissolved the band Nemesis, he started his own band under the name Candlemass (a misspelling of Candlemas). The first Candlemass album was Epicus Doomicus Metallicus released in 1986, considered a milestone in the Doom metal scene. The line-up in Epicus Doomicus Metallicus was:
  • Leif Edling: bass
  • Matz Ekstrom: drums
  • Mats Mappe Bjrkman: guitar
  • Johan Langquist: vocals
The next release was Nightfall (1987), hailed as being one of the greatest Doom metal albums ever, with some changes in the line-up and adding a new dimension to the band. The new members were Messiah Marcolin (vocals), Lars Johansson (lead guitar) and Jan Lindh (drums). This line-up is considered the most important and successful in band's history. The next two albums were Ancient Dreams(1988) and Tales Of Creation(1989). In 1990, a live album saw the light. Differences arose between the band members resulting in the Messiah Marcolin's decision to leave the band. After the departure of Marcolin, Candlemass recruited vocalist Tomas Vikstrm and recorded Chapter VI. The album was not too successful and after that Candlemass disbanded, mainly by the decision of leader Leif Edling to form another project by the name of Abstrakt Algebra. With Abstrakt Algebra not doing it well, Leif suddenly returned to the studio with the name of Candlemass and a complete new line-up to record Dactylis Glomerata and later From The 13th Sun. Not being so successful as the previous albums, this recordings was taken very well by the fans. In 2002, the band decided to re-unite and perform some live shows that had a great response and the result was other live album with the classic Candlemass line-up. Recently their first albums were remastered (Epicus..., Nightfall, Ancient Dreams and Tales of Creation) and a DVD has been released as well, by the name of Documents of Doom. The band was working on a new album, with some new songs recorded, and searching for a record label, but differences arose again, resulting in a new disband of the group. In the meantime, Leif Edling started a new project, Krux, with former Abstrakt Algebra singer Mats Leven and two members of Entombed. In November 2004, the band announced that they have re-united again and are ready to record a new album in the classic line-up.
