Canadian Trade Office In Taipei

The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) is Canada's representation in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Due to the agreement in October 1970 that established diplomatic relations between Canada the People's Republic of China, Canada "takes note" of, albeit not using the word "support", the PRC's position in the One China Policy, i.e., "the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government of all of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China." Therefore, the Government of Canada cannot have embassy nor consulates in Taiwan. By calling these Canadian representations "Trade Office", the Government of Canada dances around the diplomatic language surrounding "One China". CTOT was established in October 1986, and is funded by the Government of Canada and staffed by Foreign Affairs Canada and the Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Despite its name, the CTOT is not very different from any other Canadian Embassies. The CTOT does everything from issuing Canadian visas to promoting tourism in Canada. In addition, there are also provincial representives from the Governments of Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec. The ROC, likewise, is represented in Canada by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. See also:
