Campbell's Magnolia
Campbell's magnolia (Magnolia campbelli) This magnolia grows in sheltered valleys in the Himalaya from Nepal south to Assam and west to the south-west corner of China. This tree also has two varietys: var. M. alba and var. M. mollicomata. Hight: to 100ft. Its leaves are 30cm/12in long, fuzzy underneath and with a pronounced tip. The bark is smooth and grey. This tree is grown for its large (up to 30cm/12in) flowers that are widely admired. They appear very early, and the blooming time varies from late winter to early spring. The flowers of this tree are unusual because of the arrangement of the tepals. After opening, the innermost remain erect while the others spread widely, creating an effect similar to a flower candle on a flower plate. This arrangement may shelter the stamens and stigmas from rain, snow, and other harsh enviormental conditions common during their very early blooming time piriod. The abundant flowers vary in color from dark to very light pink. Young trees take a long time to reach blooming age and need deep, moist soil and a mild, shelterd site. External links
