Camden, South Carolina

Camden is a city located in Kershaw County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,682. It is the county seat of Kershaw County.

Geography

Camden is located at 34°15'33" North, 80°36'33" West (34.259146, -80.609161). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.3 km² (9.8 mi²). 25.0 km² (9.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.23% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,682 people, 2,874 households, and 1,813 families residing in the city. The population density is 267.4/km² (692.2/mi²). There are 3,283 housing units at an average density of 131.4/km² (340.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 60.72% White, 37.19% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,874 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.88. In the city the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $36,209, and the median income for a family is $53,056. Males have a median income of $37,342 versus $26,693 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,037. 16.9% of the population and 13.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
