Californication is a funk metal album by American rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on June 8, 1999 (see 1999 in music). With a returned John Frusciante on guitar (replacing Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction), the Red Hot Chili Peppers managed to regain their critical acceptance after the harshly reviewed One Hot Minute. Much to the surprise of most industry-watchers, Californication became the best-selling album in the band's catalogue. With a somewhat more subdued funk sound, Californication was vastly different from its predecessors. Adding heavy psychedelic influences, the Red Hot Chili Peppers created a series of catchy, hook-laden tracks that maintained their credibility. Many of the songs, such as the hit single "Californication", are diatribes against globalization, often with bizarrely inscrutable lyrics.
