Caithness District (1975 To 1996)

Caithness District was created as an administrative area in 1975 and consisted of the traditional county of Caithness and the Strath Naver area of Sutherland. The district was one of the districts of the Highland region, which has its administrative centre in Inverness, and they were abolished when the region became a unitary authority in 1996. Soon after the district's creation it's boundary with Sutherland District was redrawn to follow that of the former traditional counties, as shown on the map herewith. Districts had their own directly elected councils and the Royal burgh of Wick was the adminstrative centre for Caithness. Since abolition of the districts Highland Council has maintained area commitees named for them, but the boundaries of the committees' areas may not always follow those of the now historic districts.
