Cainta, Rizal

Cainta is a town in Rizal province of the Philippines. It is bounded on the north by Marikina City and San Mateo, on the West by Pasig City, and on the east and south by Taytay. The main road of Cainta is Ortigas Avenue, which connects San Juan in Metro Manila and Antipolo City. The people here are mostly Tagalog-speaking Filipinos. There is also a coniderable number of Indians here, descended from the 1700 British attack of the Philippines, where Sepoy soldiers mutineed from the British Royal Army, married local inhabitants of this town, and settled there. Their influence is very obvious, especially in the local cuisine. Cainta as a whole has no mountains. It lies in the Marikina Valley. Main attractions of this town is the Valley Golf and Country Club and its numerous malls like the Sta. Lucia Grandmall and the Robinsons Place Cainta in Junction. The name of the town was derived, according to a legend, to a charitable woman named 'Ka Inta'.This town was founded by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi on November 30, 1571, the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle. The current mayor is Ramon "Mon" Ilagan, a former ABS-CBN reporter/journalist. The dominant family here is the Felix family. The patroness of this town (Our Lady of Light) was a mural originally painted by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. Today, Cainta proudly bears its name as the "Bibingka Capital of the Philippines". This native town in Rizal is now hoping someday that it will be a city in the hands of the "Bagong Cainta".
