Csk

Csk (Hungarian, in Romanian: Ciuc) is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is presently in central Romania (eastern Transylvania). The capital of the county was Miercurea Ciuc (Romanian, Cskszereda in Hungarian).

Geography

Csk county shared borders with Romania and the Hungarian counties Beszterce-Naszd, Maros-Torda, Udvarhely and Hromszk. The rivers Olt and Mureş/Maros originate in the county. The county lies in the Carpathian Mountains. Its area was 4859 km² around 1910.

History

The Csk region was a combination of three settlements (seats) of the Szkely: Cskszk, Gyergyszk and Kszonszk. Csk county was formed in 1876, when the administrative structure of Transylvania was changed. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of Romania. Its territory lies in the present Romanian counties Harghita and Neamţ (a small part in the north-east).
