Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 56.0 km² (21.6 mi²). 55.7 km² (21.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,185 people, 7,201 households, and 4,889 families residing in the township. The population density is 308.6/km² (799.2/mi²). There are 7,500 housing units at an average density of 134.7/km² (348.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.36% White, 0.54% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,201 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.87. In the township the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males. The median income for a household in the township is $41,274, and the median income for a family is $51,824. Males have a median income of $41,486 versus $24,818 for females.
