Buffalo River (Arkansas)

The Buffalo River is a tributary of the White River, approximately 150 mi (241 km) long, in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The river flows through the Ozark Mountains and is one of the few remaining unpolluted, free-flowing rivers in the lower 48 states. The upper section of the river in the Ozark National Forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as a National Wild and Scenic River. Its scenic nature led to the designation of the lower 135 mi (216 km) of the river as Buffalo National River, managed by the National Park Service. It rises in the Boston Mountains of Newton County, in the southwestern Ozark National Forest. It flows ENE through the Ozarks, past Gilbert. Through much of its course through the Ozarks, the river cuts through an ancient riverbed surrounded by limestone cliffs. It joins the White approximately 14 mi (23 km) southeast of Yellville.
