Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,443 km² (943 mi²). 2,354 km² (909 mi²) of it is land and 90 km² (35 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.67% water. The racial makeup of the county is 80.02% White, 1.42% Black or African American, 12.16% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 4.84% from two or more races. 2.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,422 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.98. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 11.70% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
