Brownville is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,843. The Town of Brownville is located on the western side of the county.

Geography

The west border of the town is Lake Ontario and the south border is formed by the Black River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 172.5 km² (66.6 mi²). 153.6 km² (59.3 mi²) of it is land and 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.99% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,843 people, 2,184 households, and 1,633 families residing in the town. The population density is 38.0/km² (98.5/mi²). There are 2,857 housing units at an average density of 18.6/km² (48.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.84% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,184 households out of which 37.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 20.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.07. In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $38,277, and the median income for a family is $43,866. Males have a median income of $33,889 versus $21,904 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,303. 8.2% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.5% of those under the age of 18 and 11.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Glen Park -- Part of the Village of Glen Park is on the south border of the town.
  • Limerick -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 12E and 180, north of Dexter village.
  • Moffatsville -- A location in the western part of the town.
  • Paddy Hill -- A hamlet south of Brownville by the south town line.
  • Perch Lake -- A lake near the western town line.
  • Perch River -- A hamlet on Route 180 in the north part of the town near the stream called Perch River.
  • Pillar Point -- A peninsula into Lake Ontario in the western part of the town, and also, a western projection into the lake on the end of the peninsula.
  • Pillar Point Village -- A hamlet on the south coast of Pillar Point, located on Route 59.
  • Reynolds Corner -- A location near the north town line.
