History

Braunlage started out as a pit settlement in the forest in the 14th century, which was revived in 1561. In the 17th century it was a small market town, finally in 1934 it received municipal status as a health resort. In 1963 it became the location of the longest aerial tramway (of Northern Germany), with a length of 1362 meters and a height difference of 250 meters to the mountain station on the Wurmberg mountain. On May 7th, 1964 Gerhard Zucker demonstrated on the Hasselkopf hill a flight of mail rockets. One of these rockets exploded, killing three persons.
