Brattleboro (Town), VermontBrattleboro is a town located in Windham County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,005. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 84.0 km² (32.5 mi²). 82.9 km² (32.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,005 people, 5,364 households, and 2,880 families residing in the town. The population density is 144.9/km² (375.3/mi²). There are 5,686 housing units at an average density of 68.6/km² (177.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.06% White, 1.13% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.67% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. 1.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,364 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.3% are non-families. 37.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.84. In the town the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 84.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $31,997, and the median income for a family is $44,267. Males have a median income of $31,001 versus $25,329 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,554. 13.1% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line.
