Bottineau, North Dakota

Bottineau is a city located in Bottineau County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,336. It is the county seat of Bottineau County. Bottineau is home to Minot State University-Bottineau.

Geography

Bottineau is located at 48°49'32" North, 100°26'37" West (48.825455, -100.443708). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,336 people, 979 households, and 550 families residing in the city. The population density is 859.0/km² (2,230.0/mi²). There are 1,114 housing units at an average density of 409.6/km² (1,063.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.25% White, 0.34% African American, 2.87% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 979 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.8% are non-families. 41.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.86. In the city the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 18.9% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 27.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,022, and the median income for a family is $40,938. Males have a median income of $29,286 versus $20,089 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,530. 10.9% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
