Borsod

Borsod is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary in present-day north-eastern Hungary. The capital of the county was Miskolc.

Geography

Borsod county shared borders with the counties Gmr-Kishont (Gemer-Malohont), Abaj-Torna (Abov-Turňa), Zempln (Zempln), Szabolcs, Hajd and Heves. The river Tisza formed the south-eastern border, and the river Saj (Slan in Slovak) flowed through the county. Its area was 3629 km² around 1910.

History

Borsod is one of the oldest counties of the Kingdom of Hungary. After World War I, it was merged with a small part of former Gmr-Kishont county to form Borsod-Gmr-Kishont county, with its capital at Miskolc. After World War II, the county was merged with the Hungarian parts of Abaj-Torna and Zempln counties to form Borsod-Abaj-Zempln county.
