Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 991 km² (383 mi²). 985 km² (380 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,633 people, 6,155 households, and 4,345 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (46/mi²). There are 6,690 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.74% White, 7.41% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,155 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.97. In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 11.60% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 116.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 119.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $37,680, and the median income for a family is $45,413. Males have a median income of $31,849 versus $21,295 for females.
