. He has been the
play-by-play
announcer for
Hockey Night in Canada
, primarily for
Toronto Maple Leafs
games, since
1969
. He was a recipient of the
Hockey Hall of Fame

Foster Hewitt Memorial Award
for broadcasting excellence in
1996
.
As of 2004
, he is not a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame itself. Cole was also a
curler
, playing in the

1975
Briers
as the skip for the
Newfoundland
team. He also played in the

Canadian mixed championships.
