Bevagna

Bevagna (Latin Mevania), an ancient town, now a comune in the central part of the Italian province of Perugia, (Umbria), 42°56N 12°37E; at 207 m (679 ft) above sea-level in the flood plain of the Topino river (anc. Tinia). Bevagna is 25 km (15 mi) SE of Perugia, 8 km (5 mi) W of Foligno, 7 km (4 mi) NNW of Montefalco, and 15 km (9 mi) NW of Trevi. Its population as of the 2003 census was 4860, with the town proper accounting for about half of that; the frazioni of Bevagna are Cantalupo, Castelbuono, Gaglioli, Limigiano, Torre del Colle. Bevagna today is a pleasant base for visiting central Umbria, and has a dozen medieval churches; among them the two most important are both Romanesque: S. Michele Arcangelo and S. Silvestro; other notable churches include S. Agostino and S. Nicolò (also known as the church of the Bl. Donato of Bevagna).
