Berry CollegeBerry College is a private liberal arts college in north Georgia in the town of Rome. With approximately 2100 students and 28,000 acres (113 km²) of beautiful north Georgia hill country, the institution encourages academic excellence and student work and service to society in a non-denominational Christian environment. Berry was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry (1866-1942) as a school for enterprising rural white boys when few public schools existed in Georgia. A girls' school was added in 1909. A junior college was established in 1926 and a four-year college in 1930; graduate programs outside the liberal arts were added in 1972. Financial contributions from Henry Ford and from the Ford Foundation have helped the institution establish itself as one of the best small liberal arts colleges in the Southeastern United States. The Berry College mascot is the Viking. Among the angry conflicts pitting protestant fundamentalists against mainstream students and professors at the institution are the use of the College Chapel for a 9/11 Memorial that included speakers who were not protestant fundamentalists.
