Battle Of MribelThe Battle of Mribel took place at Mribel, France, on September 13 1793, when the combined forces of Savoy, Piedmont and Valdot fought the French forces occupying Savoy. As part of the French Revolution, in the year before, 1792, Revolutionary French forces had marched into Savoy to "bring freedom" to its people, while annexing it to France. However, Revolutionary ideals were not as strongly felt in Savoy, and thusly the French occupation was largely despised. In 1793, the French Republic attempted to raise an army of 300,000 men, but only 33 Savoyards signed up for service. A much larger force of Savoyards then proceeded to attack the French army in the country, managing to free the alpine valleys and Annecy. Riots hostile to the French occupation also took place in Chambry and Rumilly. However, they were not enough to remove the French presence from Savoy, and Savoy was added to the Mont Blanc department of France shortly after. The battle continues to be commemorated each year.
