Battle Of Caldiero

The Battle of Caldiero took place on October 30 1805. Marshal Massna with 37,000 French, encountered the Austrians 50,000 strong army, under the Archduke Charles, who were posted in the village and on the heights of Caldiero. Massna attacked and carried the heights, but the village held out until nightfall. During the night the Archduke removed his baggage and artillery, leaving a corps of 5,000 men, under General Hillinger, to protect his retreat. This force was captured the following day. The Austrians lost 3,000 killed and wounded, and, including Hillinger's corps, 8,000 prisoners; the French about 4,000 killed and wounded. Caldiero
