is a town in the

. It is the main town in the
borough of Barrow-in-Furness
, with a population of 71,980 (

). Barrow dates from the
19th century
and owes its existence to shipbuilding. It is one of the few remaining shipyards in the
UK
that has the capacity to build
nuclear submarines

Iron ore
was also mined in the district and exported from the docks.
