Barbara HepworthDame Barbara Hepworth (January 10, 1903 - May 20, 1975), born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was the foremost British female sculptor of her day. Her full name was Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth, but was always known as Barbara. She studied at Leeds School of Art (where she became friends with Henry Moore), the Royal College of Art, London, and in Italy. One of her most prestigious works was "Single Form" (1961-1964), a memorial to the UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjld, at the United Nations building at New York City. She was married to the sculptor John Skeaping (1901-1980), then became the second wife of the painter Ben Nicholson. She was made a Dame in 1965. She died in a fire in her studio in St Ives, Cornwall. Her home is now the Barbara Hepworth Museum.
