is a town located in
San Bernardino County, California
. As of the
2000
census, the town had a total population of 914. It is located in the
Mojave Desert
at the crossroads of
I-15
and
CA-127
. Baker is frequently used as a rest stop by drivers on the I-15 freeway between
Los Angeles, California
and
Las Vegas, Nevada
; coming from LA, it's approximately 2/3 of the way to Las Vegas. It is the last major town for those traveling on CA-127 North to
Death Valley National Park
or South to the
Mojave National Preserve
. The
Baker Desert Information Center
is operated by the
National Park Service
and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The towns most prominent feature is a 134-foot tall
thermometer
, which can be seen for miles in all directions. It is also the home of the original
Bun Boy
restaurant.
