Augusta, Michigan

Augusta is a village in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 899. The village is mostly within Ross Township, though a small portion extends south into Charleston Township. Augusta is situated on Michigan State Highway 96, about five miles northeast of Galesburg, and about seven miles west of downtown Battle Creek. Kalamazoo is an additional ten miles west of Galesburg. The Fort Custer Recreation Area is immediately south of the village on the other side of the Kalamazoo River.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.05% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 899 people, 368 households, and 238 families residing in the village. The population density is 373.2/km² (962.7/mi²). There are 392 housing units at an average density of 162.7/km² (419.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.77% White, 0.67% African American, 1.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 368 households out of which 34.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.03. In the village the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 36.8% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males. The median income for a household in the village is $44,375, and the median income for a family is $52,250. Males have a median income of $36,087 versus $30,625 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,207. 4.8% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
