Atsugi, Kanagawa

Atsugi (Japanese: 厚木市; -shi) is a city located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the ward has an estimated population of 221,226 and the density of 2,357.73 persons per km². The total area is 93.83 km². The city gained city status on February 1, 1955.

History

Atsugi is noteworthy in that it was the site of the airbase where American forces first landed in Japan, on August 28, 1945, following the Japanese surrender two weeks earlier.
