Athens Metro

The Athens Metro is the underground public transport system of Athens, Greece, constructed by the Attiko Metro (Αττικό Μετρό) company (literally 'Attican metro').

History

It was first existed in 1869 and the first line wasn't opened until 1904 as a tramway. The line became electrified in 1957. Construction began in 1996 to decrease traffic congestion and clean up the environment by reducing Athens' smog level. Unfortunately, in 1997 the line between the Syntagma and Panepistemiou stations, 24 meters deep, developed a 5-meter-wide hole. Fearing that Panepistemiou (University) Avenue and the tunnel would collapse, construction was suspended. Later that afternoon, cement trucks filled the hole with concrete to stabilize the ground and avoid closure of the avenue and the subway project. After the hole was entirely filled, construction resumed. In 2000, the red and the blue lines were first opened, the red line is 11 km long and has over 14 stations. The blue line is 15.4 km and has 10 stations of which 13 will open in the future. The eastern half of the line is shared with a high-speed rail named Proastiakos.
