Atascosa County, Texas

Atascosa County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 38,628. Its county seat is Jourdanton6. Atascosa is named for the Atascosa River. (See List of Texas county name etymologies.)

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,200 km² (1,236 mi²). 3,191 km² (1,232 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,628 people, 12,816 households, and 10,022 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 14,883 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.23% White, 0.60% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 21.53% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. 58.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,816 households out of which 41.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.80% are non-families. 18.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.99 and the average family size is 3.41. In the county, the population is spread out with 31.70% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $33,081, and the median income for a family is $37,705. Males have a median income of $27,702 versus $18,810 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,276. 20.20% of the population and 16.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.60% of those under the age of 18 and 21.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
