Ashland County, Ohio

Ashland County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 52,523. Its county seat is Ashland6. It is named for the home of Senator Henry Clay near Lexington, Kentucky.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,106 km² (427 mi²). 1,099 km² (424 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 52,523 people, 19,524 households, and 14,018 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 20,832 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (49/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.54% White, 0.81% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 19,524 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.06. In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,179, and the median income for a family is $46,306. Males have a median income of $32,585 versus $22,334 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,308. 9.50% of the population and 7.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.10% of those under the age of 18 and 7.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
