Arend Dickmann

Arend Dickmann (1572-1627) - an admiral in the Polish Navy. He was a Dutchman, born in Delft under the name Arend Dijckman. From 1608 he lived in Gdansk, being an owner of a merchant ship. In 1626 he entered in the service of the Polish king Zygmunt III Waza. On November 24, 1627 he was nominated as admiral of the Polish Navy. During the victorious battle of Oliwa against the Swedish fleet on November 28, 1627, he commanded the Polish Navy on the galleon "Sankt Georg". The Poles captured one Swedish galleon "Tigern" and made another one "Solen" scuttled by the crew, but Admiral Dickmann was killed, being shot with an artillery shell on his legs.
