ArdahanArdahan (in English also known as Erdehan), is a city, and the capital of Ardahan province (established in 1992) in northeastern Turkey. It is located on a high mountain plateau which is about 1959 meters high above the sea level and the majority of the population lives on the countryside and the main economic activity in the region is agriculture and animal breeding. Carpets and Kilim weaving plays an important role in the life of the young girls. There are many small rivers and the lakes around this area, and the Cildir Lake is the second biggest lake in the region and the people living around the lake earns their lives by fishing. Standing on a very high flatland is perfect place for the Marathon runners to exerice and lovely place with beautiful surroundings, historical places and with friendly local people. The region has very rich ancient history of the civilizations which is dating back far to anquity. The oldest written document, that is a stone incription from Urartu's, has been explored nearby the Cildir Lake. Cimmerians settled in the region in around 8th century BC. The town has been captured by the Seljuk Turks in 1069 AC by the Sultan Alpaslan, then in 1551 by Ottoman Empire. So you can encounter the remnants of the Ardahan's history everywhere. The most important monument of the city is the Ardahan Fortress that is built up by the Selcuk's (Seljuk's) and later on utilized by the Ottoman Empire. The other important castles, which are being in the city, are Kazan, Altas, Kinzi, Kalecik, Seytan Kurt, Sevimli, Cak, Savasir, Mere, Kol, Kirnak, lev, Dedesen, Karakale, Kislahanak, and Hanak. There is small skiing track in which can be skii for about 6 months because of climate conditions in the area. Besides that many festivals are organized in the province such as Honey Festival, Yellow Cheese (Kashkaval Cheese), Cildir Lake Festival and so on.
