AngoraAngora was the name of the city of Ankara in Turkey prior to 1930. This city lent its name to several breeds of animals: Angora also refers to the hair of either the Angora goat or the Angora rabbit, or the fabric made from Angora rabbit; see Angora wool. (Fabric made from angora goat is mohair.) Angora is also the name of several communities in the United States: Angora is also A Turkish "vilayet" (city in Ottoman) in north-central Asia Minor, which includes most of the ancient Galatia. It is an agricultural country, depending for its prosperity on its grain, wool and the mohair obtained from the beautiful Angora goats. The fineness of the hair may perhaps be ascribed to some peculiarity in the atmosphere, for it is remarkable that the cats, dogs and other animals of the country are to a certain extent affected in the same way, and that they all lose much of their distinctive beauty when taken from their native districts. The only important industry is carpet-weaving at Kirsehir (read "Kir-sheher") and Kayseri (read "Kaisarieh"). There are mines of silver, copper, lignite and salt, and many hot springs, including some of great repute medicinally. Angora is also a Polish language weekly press review published in Warsaw, Dortmund, Chicago, Toronto and New York. Angora should not be confused with Agora.
