Anadarko, Oklahoma

Anadarko is a city located in Caddo County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,645. It is the county seat of Caddo County. The town is the home of the Native American drum group Cozad Singers.

Geography

Anadarko is located at 35°4'9" North, 98°14'46" West (35.069203, -98.246076). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.6 km² (7.2 mi²). 18.4 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,645 people, 2,387 households, and 1,656 families residing in the city. The population density is 361.9/km² (937.0/mi²). There are 2,767 housing units at an average density of 150.7/km² (390.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 41.37% White, 6.23% African American, 41.26% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 7.80% from two or more races. 9.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,387 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 20.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.32. In the city the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,035, and the median income for a family is $27,633. Males have a median income of $26,063 versus $17,666 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,062. 28.5% of the population and 23.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.8% of those under the age of 18 and 18.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Anadarko is one of two places in Oklahoma where a Lenape tribe lives, the other being Bartlesville.
