The Amsterdam Stock Exchange (AEX) is a European stock exchange, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It recently merged with the Brussels Stock Exchange and the Paris Stock Exchange to form Euronext. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is considered the oldest in the world. It was established in 1602 as Vereinigte Ostindische Compagnie (VOC) for dealings in printed shares of the Dutch East India Company. It was subsequently renamed the Amsterdam Bourse and was the first to formally begin trading in securities.
