Amara Essy
(born

) is an
Cte d'Ivoire
diplomat. He was born in the town of Bowke, in Ivory Coast. He served as the
president
of the
United Nations General Assembly
from
1994
to
1995
. He also served as the
foreign minister
of Ivory Coast from
1990
until
2000
. In
2001
he became secretary-general of the
Organization of African Unity
and served in that position until July
2002
when that organization became the
African Union
. He then served as interim chairman of the commission of the African Union until
2003
